Cafe Driade

Young Writers’ Cafe

Join us for six weeks of creative storytelling in a cozy cafe setting! Each session begins with engaging writing prompts to spark imagination, followed by dedicated time to develop your own story or novel through freewriting. We’ll share our work in a supportive environment focused on positive feedback and encouragement.

Throughout the series, students will read an assigned novel (outside of class time) for us to analyze like real authors — exploring how writers craft compelling characters, build exciting plots, and create vivid settings. Cafe Driade offers perfect “people-watching” opportunities for character inspiration while helping young writers gain confidence in real-world spaces.

All skill levels welcome — from first-time storytellers to budding novelists!

  • Ages: 9-13
  • Days: Sundays, Sept. 14 – Oct. 19, 2025
  • Times: 3:00-4:15pm
  • Location: Cafe Driade (1215-A, E Franklin St, Chapel Hill)
  • Price: $125 for all six sessions, or $25/class

Crazy Alan’s Emporium

Silly Stories & Creative Chaos Camp

Get ready for a day of pure imagination at Crazy Alan’s Emporium! This action-packed teacher workday camp is perfect for kids who love to laugh, create, and let their minds run wild. We’ll craft hilarious Mad Libs, design our own memes, invent wonderfully weird characters, and use a range of prompts to write longer stories. 

Between writing sessions, we’ll play exciting word games, hunt for story ideas throughout the store’s quirky collection, and add colorful artwork to bring our tales to life. Whether you’re a writing newbie or a budding author, you’ll leave with fantastic stories and maybe a few new friends.

Join us for an optional trip to YoPop at the end of our camp (parents & sibling are welcome).

  • Ages: 3rd to 6th graders (younger students can join with permission)
  • Days: Tuesday, September 23, 2025
  • Times: 10am-2pm (optional pick up at YoPop at 2:30pm)

Teen Writers’ Cafe

Join us for six weeks of creative storytelling in a cozy cafe setting! Each session begins with engaging writing prompts to spark imagination, followed by short lessons on the the craft of writing. We’ll discuss plot, setting, character development, dialogue, similes and metaphors, cliffhangers, and more. We’ll share our work in a supportive environment focused on positive feedback and encouragement.

Throughout the series, students will read an assigned novel (outside of class time) for us to analyze and use as inspiration to feed our own writing. Lanza’s Cafe offers perfect “people-watching” opportunities for character inspiration while helping young writers gain confidence in real-world spaces.

  • Days: Wednesdays, Oct. 15 – Nov. 19, 2025
  • Times: 6:00-7:15pm
